IABF Launches 2023 Scholarship Application

The Italian American Baseball Foundation has opened its 2023 college scholarship application process for graduating high school seniors and current college players. Scholarships are available to Americans and international students from Italy who express pride in their culture and heritage. Applications are due April 15, 2023.

IABF Mourns Loss of Sal Bando

Italian American Sal Bando, who died at 78, played 16 Major League Baseball seasons with notable careers in Oakland and Milwaukee. A four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion, he later served eight years as the Brewers’ general manager.

Anthony Iapoce Named Manager of Toledo Mud Hens, Triple-A Affiliate of Tigers

The Detroit Tigers and Toledo Mud Hens announced that Italian American Anthony Iapoce will manage the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate in Toledo during the 2023 season. Iapoce most recently served as a minor league hitting coordinator with the Boston Red Sox and previously was a hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs.

Italian Americans Participate in Arizona Fall League

The Arizona Fall League concluded in November after featuring several Italian American players. Participants included Jake Gozzo and Vin Timpinelli with the Glendale Desert Dogs, Blair Calvo and Mike Antico with Salt River, Bryce Teodosio with Scottsdale, and Jonah Dipoto and Alex Isola with Surprise.

IABF Featured on Yankees Magazine via YES Network

YES Network featured the 2022 Italian American Baseball Foundation Gala on its Yankees Magazine program with Nancy Newman. The segment highlighted Michael Kay’s IABF Media Award and included family photographs showing generations of his Italian heritage through his mother’s side.

IABF and FIBS Sign Memorandum of Understanding Prior to NYC Gala

The Italian American Baseball Foundation and Federation of Italian Baseball and Softball signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding in Brooklyn on December 1, 2022. Joe Quagliano and Andrea Marcon signed for the organizations, which will deepen cooperation and expand baseball and softball opportunities in Italy and the United States.

IABF Hot Stove Report

The offseason includes several notable moves involving Italian American players. Trey Mancini signed a two-year deal with the Cubs after helping Houston win the 2022 World Series, while Nathan Eovaldi joined Texas on a two-year, $34 million contract and Brandon Nimmo remained with the Mets on an eight-year, $162 million deal.

Terry Francona Named American League Manager of the Year

Terry Francona, manager of the Cleveland Guardians, led baseball’s youngest team to a division title and was named American League Manager of the Year for the third time. Francona called the recognition a huge honor, and the achievement was celebrated as a distinction shared by Italian American managers and coaches.

Blog: IABF in Italy for 2022 Mission Classic

The 2022 Mission Classic brought Team Italy players and coaches together in Italy ahead of the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Organized by FIBS with support from IABF, the trip combined baseball activities, cultural experiences and heritage-focused events across Rome, Arezzo, Florence, Parma, Modena and Milan.

Joe Castiglione Finalist for Frick Award

Italian American broadcaster Joe Castiglione was named a finalist for the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford Frick Award. Castiglione has called Boston Red Sox games since 1983, and the award recognizes broadcasting excellence, game reverence, fan popularity, and peer respect.
